Gujarat sold power worth more than Rs1,450 crore to other states in the last three years, minister of state for energy, Saurabh Patel, said while replying to a question in the state assembly.

Replying to a question by Congress MLA from Nasvari, Dhiru Bhil, Patel said that the state had sold power to as many as 13 states between 2008 and 2010. He said the state sold power worth Rs353.21 crore in 2008, worth Rs392.75 crore in 2009 and worth Rs704.88 crore in 2010 to other states.

Gujarat sold 457 million units of power in 2008, 570 million units in 2009 and 1650 million units in 2010. The average selling price of each unit of power came down from Rs7.72 in 2008 to Rs6.89 in 2009, and fell further to Rs4.27 in 2010. The minister said the state’s priority was to supply adequate power to its citizens.

However, surplus power was supplied to other states to help them meet their power requirements.

According to the minister’s reply, Tamil Nadu had purchased power worth Rs522 crore from Gujarat in the last three years, followed by Andhra Pradesh with Rs225 crore.

However, AP did not purchase any power from Gujarat in 2010.

The neighbouring states of Rajasthan and Maharashtra purchased power worth Rs160 crore and Rs156 crore respectively from Gujarat from 2008 to 2010. However, Madhya Pradesh, the third state bordering Gujarat, purchased power worth only Rs27 crore. Gujarat supplied power worth Rs152 crore to Haryana.

Uttar Pradesh (Rs85 crore), Karnataka (Rs80 crore) and Delhi with Rs30 crore were the other states that purchased power from Gujarat in the last three years.

Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and West Bengal were the other states that purchased power from Gujarat from 2008 to 2010, the minister added.
