On the last day of campaigning for the by-elections in the state, Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee president Siddharth Patel and senior party leader Shaktisinh Gohil said that the people of the state have had enough of BJP rule and now prefer the Congress in power.
At a press conference on Tuesday, Patel said that because of the recent defeat in the Lok Sabha elections, chief minister Narendra Modi was afraid of campaigning for his party’s candidates for the seven assembly constituencies.

“Modi is scared of losing and is now trying to save face. He had campaigned massively for the Junagadh Municipal Corporation elections, which the BJP lost badly. So he has not turned up to campaign for the upcoming by-polls for the assembly seats in the state,” Patel said, adding the results of the by-polls will prove that the people of Gujarat want the Congress as the ruling party.

Patel said that the BJP has failed to work in the people’s interest. “The Congress managed to win the Bhesan seat of Surat after 22 years, by a margin of 2,370 votes. The Congress also managed to snatch eight seats from the BJP from a total of 33, including five in Khambhat, the Patdi seat in Surendranagar, and one Kheralu and Okha seat each,” he said. In the earlier elections, the BJP lost 12 seats of the 30 that they held in urban areas, Patel said.

Patel claimed that during campaigning, the people of Gujarat responded by saying that the BJP government has done nothing for the farmers, the common people and the salaried classes. “Their problems remain the same. The BJP government has announced mega schemes, but has not implemented them for the benefit of the people of Gujarat. The law and order situation in the state has also deteriorated under BJP rule,” he said.Meanwhile, the in-charge of the by-elections in Gujarat and the secretary of the Akhil Bharatiya Congress Samiti, P Sudhakar Reddy, who visited the Dehgam, Harij and Danta constituencies on Tuesday, said that the BJP has failed in Gujarat and does not deserve to be the ruling party.
