Ratna Vora alleged that the chief minister’s sadbhavana fasts are not part of any government programme nor were they benefiting the public at large.
A bench of the Gujarat high court on Thursday did not admit a PIL questioning the huge expenditure incurred on chief minister Narendra Modi’s sadbhavana fasts across the state.
The petitioner, Ratna Vora, is state president of the Women’s Cell of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). She had alleged that the chief minister’s sadbhavana fasts are not part of any government programme nor were they benefiting the public at large. As the fast is aimed at political gain, the expenses should be borne by the ruling BJP, the petitioner stated.
HC bench comprising acting chief justice Bhaskar Bhattacharya and justice JB Pardiwala was not inclined to admit the petition and said that the court would not like to interfere in the matter. However, the bench reserved its order.
It is pertinent to note that this is the third PIL filed on the sadbhavana fasts that Modi has been observing at different places across the state.
Earlier, Vora had filed a PIL questioning the huge expenditure incurred on the sadbhavana fast programme held in Ahmedabad last year but she withdrew it when the judge appeared disinclined to entertain it. The second PIL on the same issue was filed by advocate KG Pandit who had cited newspaper reports in his petition. But the high court rejected his petition in the absence of any robust evidence.
CM Modi began his sadbhavana fasts last year. He has been holding a series of one-day fasts in all districts of Gujarat. He also announces huge financial packages at each fast for the development. The opposition parties have already termed the fasts as political drama and waste of public money.
