The state government, for its decision to bring all the government-aided medical colleges under a single body, Medical Research and Education Society, and turn medical colleges into self-financed institutions (SFIs), is likely to face the wrath  of student and parents who are against the idea of medical education getting costlier. A couple of students and parents organisations are planning to protest the decision and have raised questions on the decision.

Nayan Shah, general secretary of Parents Association for Medical, Dental and Para Medical Students, said in his statement released on Thursday that while the parents association is welcoming the government’s decision to ensure that all the seats in medical and dental education institutes are aided by the state government, it is against the idea to convert all the institutes into SFIs. This is because it will make medical education in these SFIs more costly and only students with money, not merit, would be able to get admission.

“State government should ensure that meritorious students should not be deprived of medical education because of financial crunch,” said Shah.

On the other hand, the All India Democratic Students’ Organisation (AIDSO) has also decided to stage demonstrations against the state government’s decision. Bhavik Raja, secretary of the Gujarat State Committee of AIDSO said, “We are going to protest the state government’s decision to convert all the government-aided medical colleges into self-financed institutes. We will stage agitation on October 16 at VS Hospital gates.”
