Gujarat government will be exploring the possibilities of developing tie-ups with Astrakhan, Russia, in the areas of oil exploration, shipping, shipbuilding industries and other sectors. A nine-member delegation, led by the vice-governor and head of Astrakhan, Konstantin Markelov, is on an official visit to Gujarat from November 7 to 10.

The delegation met minister of state for industries, power and energy, Saurabh Patel, on Tuesday. Talking about the discussions with the Russian delegation, the minister said, “Many points on increasing tie-ups between Gujarat and Astrakhan were discussed. We are focusing on oil exploration activities in Astrakhan, as in the area of shipping and shipbuilding industries. We have invited   businessmen and industries in Astrakhan to participate in the next Vibrant Gujarat Summit.”

He further said, “We will also be sending a delegation of GCCI to Astrakhan for exploring the possibilities of business between the two states.”

The delegation also exchanged the protocol to enhance co-operation with Gujarat, as an extension of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by chief minister Narendra Modi in 2001. Markelov exchanged the letters of extension of ‘Protocol of Co-operation’ with chief secretary AK Joti for bringing the two regions closer with enhanced trade, joint ventures, social, cultural and economic exchanges.

The latest exercise is an extension of the MoU signed by Modi with Governor of Astrakhan in Moscow in 2001.
