After granting approval to many private universities in Gujarat in 2009, now the state government is ensuring that all the universities maintain the prescribed academic standards.

In a meeting held at Gandhinagar on Wednesday, Vice-Chancellors of public universities and directors and director generals of private universities were called to meet Prof Sukhdev Thorat, chairman of university grants commission. It was decided in the meeting that all the universities will be implementing the choice-based credit system from June 2010.

In the meeting it was found that after the private universities were formed, these institutions were following many practices that were not in accordance with the UGC guidelines.

A V-C present at the meeting, on the condition of anonymity told DNA, “It was found by the state education department that after getting approval from the state government, many universities have not formed their governing bodies and were functioning on their own without a decision making body.”
