The Gujarat police are getting a leg up on terrorism. The Police Training Academy in Karai on Monday kicked off a two-day seminar on terrorism - new trends and counter measures, the second such seminar it has organised in recent times.

Inspector general of police (training) Vinod Mall said the training programme is being attended by around 30 cops from all over the state. "Terrorism is an increasing threat these days. At our level, through this seminar, we are looking at how to combat terror at a local level. We're also trying to look at how and why it happens. This is a forum where we keep updating ourselves constantly," he said.

Speakers at the seminar are senior police officials from the state who share their experiences and knowledge with the younger crop.

Up ahead are a few interesting courses like 'Vertical Interaction for IPS officers' of the state. "This workshop would be for senior officers. It would help them with seamless communication amongst themselves," Mall said. Another is a two-day workshop on naxalism, its trends nation-wide and counter-measures.

"As the Prime Minister said some time back, naxalism is the single largest internal security threat to India. In Gujarat too, we have some movements in southern districts," he said, adding that the dates for these workshops are yet being finalised.
Last month, the institute had also organised a special workshop on 'tactics' to deal with terrorism, which also included urban warfare - the kind of situation that the country faced when hotels in Mumbai were attacked on November 26, 2008. Officials from five to six states attended the workshop.
