With an eye on 2012 assembly elections, the Gujarat Congress has sought guidance from the Brahmin community. The Congress has reminded the Brahmins of their duty to guide the community on right path and take up cudgels against injustice in the state. However, the Brahmin leaders also warned the Congress party of use and throw policy.

Top brass of Congress including All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Mohan Prakash, Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Arjun Modhwadia, leader of opposition in Gujarat Assembly Shaktisinh Gohil and former Gujarat chief minister Shankarsinh Vaghela attended gathering of the Brahmins to mark the birthday of community leader Jagdish Dave on Monday.

The Congress leaders voiced their concerns over the current socio-political situation in Gujarat and asked the Brahmin community to provide guidance. They cited various anecdotes from mythology to history and freedom struggle. "The Congress has natural alliance with the Brahmins and first generation of Congress was Brahmins," said Arjun Modhwadia, president of GPCC.

On the other hand, Shankarsinh Vaghela asked the Brahmins to come together and organise a gathering each in Rajkot, Surat and Vadodara and two in Ahmedabad in January 2012 with a clear anti-government agenda. He also assigned the responsibility of organising the gathering even as Mohan Prakash asked the community members to exact revenge of Haren Pandya's murder and get justice to his family.

However, the Brahmin leaders made it clear that the community will no longer tolerate the use and throw policy by political parties. "If the Congress does not seek guidance, we cannot do anything. The Brahmins are not fools anymore; they know their strengths," said Jagdish Dave, a leader of Brahmin community.
