The Congress Legislative Party (CLP) passed seven resolutions in a meeting of Congress MLAs (Members of the Legislative Assembly) recently.

The meeting was held at the assembly building in preparation for the monsoon session scheduled to commence on September 6.

Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly, Shaktisinh Gohil, president of Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) Siddharth Patel, former leader of the Opposition Arjun Modhwadia and Congress whip in the state assembly Iqbal Patel were present at the meeting, along with other senior Congress leaders.

The CLP passed seven resolutions in the meeting, most of which are regarding issues that have been raised time and again.

The resolutions criticised the state government for the alleged involvement of former home minister Amit Shah in extortion cases, for insulting parliamentary traditions by calling the monsoon session for only one day, for spending public money for publicity and ignoring people's representatives, for organising the Garib Kalyan Melas and treating the poor like beggars there, for not inviting Congress MLAs to government programmes, and for not giving the post of the deputy speaker to the Congress.

The party also spoke on the need to give relief to farmers whose fertile lands and crops have been washed away by the heavy rains.

One of the resolutions says that there are many government circulars and protocol booklets which say that it is the duty of the government to ensure the dignity and respect of local MLAs.

However, the state government is not inviting Congress MLAs to local-level programmes and protocol is not followed.

Another resolution says that while it is compulsory to appoint a deputy speaker in the assembly from a non-ruling party, the post of the deputy speaker has been kept vacant for the last many years.
