The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 19 seats while Congress candidates managed to bag 15 seats in the by elections for civic bodies held recently in the state. The results for the by-polls were declared on Tuesday. The BJP was handed down a defeat by the Congress candidate Pravin Parmar in Juna Vadaj ward.

Congress candidate Pravin Parmar won the by-election for the one seat of Juna Vadaj ward. The seat fell vacant following the death of Congress corporator Savaji Makwana. Parmar registered victory over his nearest rival Bhanuprasad Vania of the BJP by around 2300 votes. The seat was reserved for the schedule caste.
It should be noted that Juna Vadaj has remained a stronghold for the Congress in the civic body election for many years now.

However, the BJP was pinning its hope on Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) candidate Ramesh Parmar splitting the Congress votes. But Ramesh Parmar managed to get only around 1100 votes.

Manilal Parmar, Ramesh Parmar's father, had joined NCP on the last day of filling of nomination for the by-election as the Congress had denied a ticket to his son. The BJP fought tooth and nail and deployed an army of party workers and corporators but failed to register a victory.

The civic polls for 34 seats of municipalities, municipal corporations, district panchayats and taluka panchayats were held recently.

The Congress lost two of its traditional seats in Vadodara and Valsad to the BJP. The Congress also lost two seats in Palanpur in Banaskantha district. IK Jadeja, spokesperson for BJP, said, the party has gained four seats which were earlier dominated by the Congress.

"The voters have given their mandate in favour of the BJP," he said.
