That the consciousness about a green planet is spreading rapidly seems evident from the number of seminars and conferences happening in Ahmedabad. In a first of sorts, the School of Sciences at Gujarat University is organising a three-day international conference on ‘Environmental issues in emerging and advanced economies’ — Canada and India — in December.

Some of the broad areas that will be covered at the conference, which will be held at the Sanskar Kendra, Paldi from December 6 to 8, are global warming; pollution and its impact on human health; space technology; disaster management; the philosophy, ethics and politics of environmentalism; bioremediation and polluted sites. The conference is being jointly organised by the department of chemistry of Gujarat University and the James Reaney Canadian Centre.

“The conference attempts to probe the transitions that taking are place in demography, economy and the environment, through the experiences of Canada, an advanced economy with low stress on demography but high stress on environment through global warming and Arctic shrinkages; and India, an emerging economy with high stress on demography but low stress on environmental issues,” said Dr Shobhana Menon, head of the chemistry department.

More than 100 national and international delegates, most experts on the subject, are expected to attend the conference, which will be the first of its kind, covering such a wide range of subjects, being held in the city for climate change. Academic papers by research scholars from India and Canada, and invited lectures and presentations from both countries will be made. A lot of focused discussion will also take place on the state of environment protection in Gujarat.

The emerging services sector, which constitutes more than 52 per cent of the Indian economy, is one of the major causes of concern in the case of environment protection. The conference proposes to discuss issues related to the environment, from the perspective of science and technology, social sciences, live sciences, philosophy, ethics, law, commerce, trade and liberal arts, among others, so as to build bridges of understanding between India and Canada for mutual benefit, Dr Menon said.
