Government today expressed readiness to hold assembly elections in Jharkhand after monsoon with the Lok Sabha approving extension of President's rule there beyond July 19.

"It is my desire that the new government should take over as soon as possible in Jharkhand. I am sure the election should be held soon after the monsoon", home minister P Chidambaram told the House.

Replying to the discussion on the motion for extension of the central rule, he said, "The President's rule has given relief to the people of the state. But an elected government is required. I assure the House that if the President's rule is extended in the state, the polls could be held after the monsoon."

In the backdrop of recent moves for formation of an alternative government, Chidambaram also made it clear that the Congress was not interested. "I have the authorisation of the Congress President ..... (to say this)," he said.

Earlier the House rejected motion for revoking the President's Rule in Jharkhand by BJP members Arjun Munda, Hukumdeo Narayan Yadav and Dvidhan Besra by voice vote.

The House also approved the Budget for Jharkhand for 2009-10 along with the relevant appropriation bills.

The brief discussion saw members cutting across party lines seeking early elections.
