The government today rejected opposition demand for a discussion in the Lok Sabha on the issue of price rise through an adjournment motion, which will necessitate a voting.

"These discussions do not lie under (the purview of) adjournment motion," parliamentary affairs minister PK Bansal told reporters. Accusing the opposition of being not fair on the issue, he said the government was not afraid to face any motion. "We are very confident. We are going to last for five years. There is no fear of anything.....," he said.

He was replying to a question whether he feared that the government would lose majority when voting under adjournment motion is taken up.

Bansal said the government's objection was on matters of principles as the opposition was not playing as per rules governing the conduct of the House.

Besides, he said, under adjournment motion the discussion could be taken up only at four PM and it has to be completed within two-and-a-half hours, while a special discussion under 193 could go up to seven hours.

Earlier, the opposition parties said they would move an adjournment motion in Lok Sabha tomorrow if the government failed to hold a discussion on the price rise issue.

Opposition leaders, including Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj, met Speaker Meira Kumar and said if the government does not discuss the issue tomorrow itself, they would move an adjournment motion in the House.

Besides Swaraj and CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta, others present in the meeting included Basudeb Acharia of CPI-M, RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav.

The issue has received support from major UPA partners like Trinamool Congress and DMK, which have also sought a full-fledged debate on price rise.
