They may be at each others throat, but the vanishing girl child has given the separatists and the country’s youngest chief minister Omar Abdullah a reason to fight for a good cause.

The alarming decline in the sex ratio has prompted the separatists and mainstream leaders to launch vigorous awareness campaigns, though separately, for saving the girl child in Jammu and Kashmir.

Census 2011 has revealed an alarming decline in the sex ratio in J&K. The figures have put the sex ratio (females per 1000 males) in J&K at 883 down by nine points since 2001 census.

Leh district has the lowest sex ratio in the country at 583. What is more alarming is the modern cities of Jammu and Srinagar too have recorded low sex ratio at 871 and 879 respectively in 2011.

“We may have progressed, but the truth (female feoticide) has exposed the hollowness in our society. Our heads hang in shame when we learn that babies are killed alive in mothers’ wombs,” said Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chairman Yasin Malik.

JKLF has decided to forge an alliance between the religious leaders and parties to unitedly fight this menace. “JKLF being a responsible part of the Kashmiri society will stand up against this crime. We believe that our religious and social leaders will give a new direction to our society so that the ugly stain on our face is washed off,” said Malik.

Waking up to this menace, moderate Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq called upon all imams and scholars to launch a vigorous awareness campaign against female feoticide.

“There is a drastic decline in the male-female ratio in the 0-6 age group”, Omar said.

“If anything needed a mass movement and public appeals it would be this,” he tweeted.
