The decision to hold a Common Entrance Test (CET) for engineering admissions has generated much heat among the premier Indian Institutes of Management, with IIT-Kanpur unfurling the flag of dissent and announcing its decision to hold an independent entrance exam in 2013.
Amid the furore in the various IITs across the country over the Union HRD ministry’s move, one of the younger entrants to the pack - IIT Gandhinagar - is not yet sure which way it will go.
When DNA spoke to the director of IIT-Gandhinagar, SK Jain, he said they had not yet decided if they would follow the CET or go independent like the IIT-Kanpur for admissions to the 2013 batch.
“Academic year 2012 has just begun. It is too early to comment on the admission method for 2013,” he said, stressing the institute had not yet taken any decision on the issue.
Explaining IIT-Kanpur’s announcement, Jain said it was one of the biggest IITs, and would need to start preparations for the entrance test early. He said IIT-Gandhinagar had a whole year to take a stand.
“We are a baby IIT which does not participate actively in the admission process. Earlier, the seven main IITs in India jointly held responsibility for the admission procedure, right from organising the IIT-Jee and collecting fees to admitting students to the Gandhinagar institute,” he said.
He said he would like to focus on the students and facilities provided to the new batch, which is expected to start in July.
Though Jain preferred not to comment on joining the CET, it is believed the decision would be taken after consulting the board of governors.
IIT-Gandhinagar, founded in 2008, has been functioning under the mentorship of IIT-Powai, but reports state that from 2013 it will become a self-governing institute like the other major IITs.
Meanwhile, there are reports that the prime minister will meet a delegation of the IITs on Thursday following a request to intervene on the proposed CET issue.
