If you are thinking about what you can give back to the only known human habitat - your planet earth — Gujarat Energy Development Agency (GEDA) has a suggestion for you.

Just get your business and home energy audited voluntarily. It will be doubly beneficial: it will help you save money from your pocket and you can contribute in making the state energy-efficient, at one go.

After successfully initiating energy audits for small and medium scale industries, GEDA has now started energy audits for homes. RN Pandya, Sr. project executive in the agency, said, "We have already started training youth to carry out energy audits in homes. We have trained nearly 385 young boys and girls, who have carried out home audits in 6000 households in the rural areas. We are aiming to get 5000 unemployed persons trained for this work through non-government organisations and rope them in for home audit activities."

The details collected from 6000 households are being analysed and the findings will be used for policy making about energy awareness.

"We have given a three-page form to all the trained people going for the audits and they get the details about how many electrical and electronics appliances people have, how many vehicles they possess, what medium they use for cooking, number of earning members etc.

"We will be doing categorisation to arrive at firm conclusions," said Pandya.

He added: "Apart from that, we are doing walk-through energy audits for small and medium enterprises. We have three lakh SMEs in the state so we have categorised them into 12 industrial clusters. So far we have done 1200 walk-through audits and the response is pretty good.
