A Delhi court has sentenced four men to eight years rigorous imprisonment for robbery in a private bus and expressed concern over rise of such instances in the capital.

Additional sessions judge refused to show any leniency to convicts Lala Ram, Satish, Prakash and Sunil, and also imposed Rs4,000 fine each on them, saying they created "fear psychosis" in public.

"The convicts are desperate criminals who have no fear of law and have committed robbery in broad day light in a moving bus, which is a part of public transport system, creating a fear psychosis in the minds of the general public which adversely affects peace and social order," the court said.

It also noted that they took law into their hands purely for monetary reasons.

In the order, the court also expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order situation and the incidents of robbery involving youth.

"Law and order situation has been deteriorating in the country and has worsened in the recent past. Instances of young people getting involved in criminal activities of robbing innocent persons by putting them under threat of death, are also on rise.

"They are spreading terror in the society and adversely affecting social order and the faith of people in the system," the court said.

The four convicts were apprehended on December 23, 2008, with the help of passengers when Ashwani Kumar Rattan raised alarm immediately as they robbed him of Rs 33,500 in the blueline bus at GTK Road here at knife-point.

The court, in its judgement, appreciated the courage shown by Rattan, and the bus driver who stopped the vehicle near a PCR van sensing trouble.

"But for the courage shown by the complainant Rattan and the instant reflex by the driver of the blueline bus namely Sunil, who immediately stopped the bus near the PCR Van, the convicts could never have been apprehended and taken to task," the court said.
