In another incident of pupils deserting government-run schools for scheduled castes and tribes in Orissa, 40 students ran away from a hostel in Kandhamal district accusing school authorities of giving them a "raw deal", official sources said.

Around 40 students of a Seva-Shrama school (primary) at Bhaliapani village block fled from the hostel on Thursday alleging that they were provided with inferior quality of food and were not given blankets and school uniform. The students demanded removal of the school headmistress accusing her of instrumental in giving them a raw deal. The students pasted their demands on the hostel wall.

While around 12 of the runway students were persuaded to return, efforts were on to bring back the other students, district welfare officer (DWO) N R Kanhar said. Rubbishing the allegations, a district official said, "The allegations are baseless and the students are apparently being used in political rivalry."

Students of two Kanya-Shramas (high-schools) at Pakalamahala and Lingagada under Daringibadi and Baliguda block in the district had fled from the hostel recently levelling charges against their teachers.

Concerened over such incidents, the state government has asked block development officers to ensure supervision of the SC/ST schools by the panchayats and also instructed them to convene meetings among the panchayat representatives, headmasters and the hostel superintendents to discuss the problem of the schools.

The government directive, however, has taken a backseat with the BDOs in most of the blocks of Kandhamal district not having convened such a meeting.
