A former senior BJP leader re-joined the Saffron party on Friday. Several other leaders from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Janata Dal (U) were also taken into the BJP's fold on the same day.

Former commissioner of police, Vadodara and former minister in Keshubhai Patel's government, Jaspal Singh, rejoined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Vadodara. Apart from Singh, municipal counselors of JD (U) Shailesh Mehta (Sotta), Dipak Shrivastav, son of BJP MLA from Vaghodia Madhu Shrivastav and Poonam Shah also joined BJP with 500 party workers.

President of NCP, Vadodara unit Suneel Singh (Pappu Singh) also joined BJP with his supporters. Jaspal Singh had resigned from the BJP after he was not given a berth in the first government formed by Narendra Modi in 2001.  Singh, a 1957 batch IPS officer, was a four-time MLA of Vadodara and a cabinet level supplies minister in the Keshubhai government.

Singh had filed a case in which he had accused Modi of defaming him after the latter allegedly called him a Pakistani agent. Talking about his induction into BJP, Singh said, "I had left BJP out of sheer anger but now I want to serve the people of my country so I am back in the party. I will work according to the party's mandate."
"I have grabbed an opportunity for which I was waiting since long." When asked about Modi's approval on his rejoining the party, Singh said, "Everybody knows that things have happened with Modi's knowledge."

Singh had a strong political influence in Vadodara from where he became an MLA for four consecutive times.

Prior to joining BJP, he had formed his own political party named Sandhan Party. His party won 23 seats in the Vadodara Municipal Corporation and he had become the mayor.

His wife had also won an election at the same time.  Later he won an assembly seat as an independent candidate and joined BJP. BJP Gujarat unit president RC Faldu was present on the occasion when he joined the party.

Jagadeesh Bhavsar, convener of BJP media cell, said that independent member of Vadodara district panchayat, Ketan Inamdar, social worker Bhagawan Parmar, member of Savali-Varachhada taluka panchayat Raju Patel have also joined BJP along with their supporters.
