There is good news for those who missed participating in the competition for designing the symbol for the Indian Rupee. A contest of similar magnitude is slated to take place, this time for designing the symbol of the ‘I-Mark’.

As the India Design Council gears up to introduce the I-Mark in the country to distinguish products with laudable design practices, the council is planning to open a national-level competition for a symbol for the same.

The best entry will be selected as the official I-Mark, and will be stamped on every product of good design in the country.

Speaking on their plans to have a public competition for I-Mark symbol, the director of National Institute of Design (NID), Pradyumna Vyas, who is also the member secretary of the India Design Council, said: “We are planning to hold a public competition for a symbol of I-Mark, so that the symbol adjudged the best can be used as I-Mark’s official symbol by authorised products.”

Speaking on why the council chose to launch a competition for the symbol instead of choosing one internally, Vyas said, “I-Mark will be a new concept for people. Launching an open competition will not only help us get a large number of symbols to choose from, but will also make people aware about the I-Mark.”

According to Vyas, I-Mark is going to be seen on a variety of products that are recognised as well-designed ones. It is meant to improve the life of people, and it is therefore important that people know about it.

“The competition for the symbol will be held soon this year. We are still working out the criteria for the I-Mark. But one thing is sure: the I-Mark should clearly mark the product as one belonging to India. The symbol should not only be representative of Indian traditions and be easy to recollect, but should look good on the products as well.”

About the application of the I-Mark on products, Vyas said that the competition for products desiring authorisation to use the I-Mark will be launched early next year, so that people can submit their entries by June.

He said, “The selection committee will consist of eminent designers and experts in the field from across the country. We will hopefully announce the first lot of I-Mark products by around October or November next year.”
