First rains sink Mangrol

Breaking the long spell of dry weather, rains played havoc in many parts of many parts of Saurashtra which witnessed heavy rainfall on late Friday night leaving many low lying areas being inundated.

Mangrol town in Junagadh district remained worst affected with 303 mm rainfall. Around 50 people from low-lying areas in Mangrol were evacuated to safer spot in a school, say officials.

In its forecast for the next 36 hours, the Met department states ‘heavy to very heavy rain fall will occur at isolated places over Saurashtra, Kutch and Diu regions’. On the other hand, the overnight downpour in Saurashtra regions has also helped fill up more than 15 reservoirs with considerable amount of rain water.

Sorathi and Dhrofal dam in Porbander district were over flowing due to over night down pour. Residents cheer arrival of fresh rain water in reservoirs as Saurashtra is a region with water scarcity. Cities like, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Surednranagar, Porbander and Bhavnagar received good rainfall.

The water level in Ukai dam, the lifeline of south Gujarat, has increased by over two feet in as many days to rise to 290.77 feet on Saturday. This was due to good rainfall in the catchment areas in MP and Maharashtra. Around 23,000 cusec water was flowing into the dam at 4.00 pm on Saturday. The dam’s danger level is 345 feet. Meanwhile, water level in Hathnoor dam also rose to 210 metre, while its danger level is 214 metre.

Ahmedabad received 5 mm rain till Saturday morning, Amreli 6 mms, Anand 5 mm, Banaskantha 4 mms, Bharuch 3 mm, Bhavnagar 6 mm, Surat 9 mm and Junagadh 13 mm.

No fresh casualty was registered in the state due to rain. However, till now 46 people have lost their lives during the monsoons, state control room data states.
