Air India’s first chief operating officer, Gustav Baldauf, is scheduled to join the airline from June 1. But till now, neither is his salary package final nor have his key result areas (KRAs) been finalised.
Civil aviation minister, Praful Patel, said on Wednesday that Baldauf will join from the first of next month.
But AI’s chairman and MD Arvind Jadhav told DNA that his remuneration is yet to be finalised.
“He has given us some proposals, we have also made our proposals….we have to finalise things before June 1.”
Senior ministry officials said that Baldauf’s KRAs still need to decided, but expressed hope that he won’t be rigid as far as the compensation package is concerned.
If Baldauf does join from next month, it would be amid opposition from certain sections of employees who have questioned the need to bring in an expat at an “exorbitant” salary to manage the national carrier.
Some have expressed apprehensions about the airline management creating yet another level of reporting structure - Baldauf is an operations man and would be overall in-charge of the day-to-day operations of Air India.
Till recently, he was working as executive vice-president (flight operations) in Austrian Airlines; he has earlier worked as vice president (operations) in Jet Airways.
Baldauf’s appointment has been approved by the Board of Directors of the airline last month and he would be responsible for all steps to turn around the ailing national carrier.
He was selected from a list of over 100 applicants.
The airline had last month appointed Mahindra and Mahindra vice chairman Anand Mahindra, Ambuja realty group chairman Harsh Neotia, FICCI secretary general Amit Mitra and former Indian Air Force chief Fali H Major as independent directors to advise on the turnaround of the company.
