Even as the issue of 33% reservation for women in Parliament hangs fire, the traffic department of the city is facing acute shortage of women staff. According to traffic department sources, of the total strength of 950 traffic personnel there are just 20 women traffic cops in the department.

There are 180 traffic points in the city with 72 signal points but only eight of the 20 women traffic cops are deployed at signal points. Department sources say that as few women traffic cops are deployed at traffic points, male traffic personnel often face difficulty in dealing with female offenders. The eight traffic points where women traffic cops are deployed includes one each in Delhi Darwaza, Paldi Circle, Anjali Crossroad,
Thaltej, Relief Road, Shahibaugh, Maninagar, and Narol.

The other 12 women traffic cops are deployed at JCP office, DCP office, ACP office at Karanj, Children's park at Sardarbaugh and at the high court in Laldarwaja.
Commenting on the dismal presence of women traffic cops at various traffic points DCP of traffic, MM Anarwala said the department has 950 police personnel of which 20 are women.

"Even the male traffic personnel deployed at various traffic points at times find it hard to handle the offenders," he said. "There are various instances when offenders have injured traffic cops in their attempt to escape being caught. Under such circumstances it will be difficult for a women cop to handle such offenders," he said.

Moreover, the staff strength is very less. Due to these reasons more women cops are deployed at offices than traffic points, he said. A women traffic cop said they preferred to be deployed at offices rather than traffic points as the latter called for working in harsh conditions. Three years ago the then Ahmedabad commissioner of police J Mahapatra had recruited 35 women traffic cops and deployed all of them at traffic points.
