Due to the continuing dry spell in sundargarh district, the farmers would make huge khariff crops losses.

The farmers of the rain-fed Sundargarh district worried due to low rainfall during current monsoon till August end though the agriculture officials are relying on the last few days of the month.

This is for the second consecutive year the monsoon is playing truant during the khariff season. The eratic rainfall has stalled the cultivation process as the farmers are unable to complete sowing and transplantation.

With only a week to go of August, the district so far has received around 153 mm rainfall against the normal 393.9 mm for the month of August, an official sources said.

While the month of June recorded a deficit rainfall of 154.7 mm against the normal 237.5 mm. July was no better at 251.25 mm against the expected 286.4 mm. While low rainfall this month rekindled hopes of farmers in Lathikata,Koira, Nuagaon, Kuanrmunda and Bargaon blocks with 90 mm, 52 mm, 53mm 93 mm and 60 mm rainfall respectively are on the brink of a drought like situation, the sources said.

These position in Hemgir block was reported similarly grim situation and the farmers have already raised their anxiety and demanded that the government should declare drought in their block.

Sundargarh, Panposh and Bonai agriculture divisions in the district have about three lakh hectres of agricultural land. Out of this, khariff crop occupies 2.5 lakh hectres. But, due to inadequate rain, nearly 95 per cent of land has been affected.

The water retention capacity of most of the small dams and irrigation projects in the district is very poor and not enough to fulfill the requirement of the area.

As records over the past five years show rainfall decreasing every year, the government should make arrangements to project the interest of the farmers, the Rajya Sabha MP, Mangala Kisan from Sundargarh district said, "I met state agriculture minister, Damodar Rout recently and apprised him of the scenrio."
