RC Faldu, three-time MLA and chief whip of the BJP in Gujarat, was today unanimously elected president of the state unit.

Faldu was the only candidate to have filled the form to head the party's state unit yesterday. He was declared president today at a state executive meeting presided over by senior party leader Gopinath Munde.

Chief minister Narendra Modi had proposed Faldu's candidature, which was supported by all the district- and block-level presidents and state executive members.

Munde said Faldu is a hardworking party worker, who comes
from the grassroots.

Faldu is a three-time legislator from Kalawad constituency in
Jamnagar district of Saurashtra region and belongs to the Leuva
Patel community, which is a numerically significant community
for the BJP.

Faldu also has the backing of the RSS as he was earlier associated with its activities in the state.

"BJP is a party of common workers and my elevation suggests that a common worker can rise to become the state party head," Faldu said.

"I am always a common worker of the BJP," he said. "Now, as state party head, I will work as a common worker to strengthen the
organisational base of the party."

According to the new Gujarat BJP president, his immediate
challenge is the forthcoming elections to the local bodies.
