If you are approached by a team of friendly cops asking you to remove the jewellery that you are wearing and put it in safe keeping in your purse you are advised not to listen to them and immediately scream for help.

For, the friendly cops are most likely to be a gang of thieves who specialise in posing as police officials. Their modus operandi includes targeting old women and asking them to remove their jewellery and put in their purse for safe keeping.

Three such incidents were reported from the city on Thursday in Satellite, Vastrapur and Ghatlodia area.

In the Satellite incident, one Pallavi Patel was approached by three people posing as cops. Patel was on her way from Omkareshwar temple, when the three asked her to remove her jewellery as there was a police checking ahead.

They asked her to put the jewellery in her bag and even helped her do so. But by the slight of hand they pocketed the jewellery themselves. Patel lost jewellery worth Rs1.20 lakh.

The same modus operandi was used to dupe two other senior women in Ghatlodia and Vastrapur. A senior cop said that a special squad has been created to nab such gangs, however, there has not been much success with the same. The cop also asked people to remain vigilant and not get taken in by the gangs' stories.

The police, meanwhile, have made a special squad, for patrol in the city to nab such gangs. The members of such gangs operate in a group of two or more and strike in more than one area at a time, the cops said.
