Fake police continue to hound citizens. A 62-year-old woman was cheated by fake police on Saturday morning, when she was on her way to a temple. Interestingly, when the woman refused to cooperate, the fraudsters took the help of another passerby, probably an accomplice, to convince her of their identity. She fell prey to their second attempt of cheating and lost bangles worth Rs1 lakh.

According to case details, as Daksha Patel, a resident of Sagar Flats in Memnagar, was passing through Kachiya Patel Ni Wadi near her residence at 9:30 am, towards a nearby temple, two men on a black-coloured bike intercepted her.

They introduced themselves as policemen, and asked her where she was headed to. They then advised her to hand over her jewellery to them as there was police checking ahead. The old women retorted that duplicate police were rampant these days, and that she did not believe them. She also accused the duo on face of being fake cops as original policemen never demand ornaments from citizens.

Realising that the old lady was a tough nut to crack, the duo brandished their card. Paying no heed to them, she started walking.

Meanwhile, the duo intercepted another man and asked him to hand over his jewellery on the pretext of police checking. He earnestly did as was told, and using his example, the duo again asked the lady to do the same.

This time they succeeded. They pretended to pack her bangles in a piece of paper, and handed it back to the old lady.  After walking away, the old woman was in utter dismay as she checked the packet and found no trace of her bangles worth Rs1 lakh.

Patel has filed a complaint in this regard with Gujarat University police station. Investigations for the same are on.
