The Detection of Crime Branch, Ahmedabad city, on Sunday arrested one Ashok Desai for tampering with 39 cheques and drawing a large amount of money from various banks. However, during the course of interrogation it was revealed that the accused had also duped people by using fake email id of former Miss India and famous Bollywood and Tollywood actor Deepti Bhatnagar. He promised them a career in the film industry.
“He even conducted several auditions for girls in Mumbai, after inviting them through an email id in the name of Deepti Bhatnagar,” investigating officer, DCB, KK Patel told DNA. Patel further said that if Bhatnagar files a complaint in this direction, the crime branch would take strict action against him.

Bhatnagar operated through her email id deeptibhatnagar@yahoo.com, so Desai made a similar id, deeptibhatnagar@gmail.com, and started inviting youngsters, promising to provide them an opportunity to make it big in the film industry. “He conducted several auditions at posh hotels in the name of Bhatnagar, and later even conned them by exacting a large amount of money,” Patel said.

The police are now interrogating him about his network in the other cities. As of now, he has confessed to committing crime in Odhav and Maninagar police station areas. He was earlier booked for a cheating case in Naroda police station.

Desai was wanted by the DCB for cheating several people and tampering with their cheques, which they submitted to him for verification service as a process to avail visa. Desai convinced people to write a cheque of Rs200 or Rs300 to VFS (verification service). “He ensured that the cheque was written with his pen so that he could later on easily rub it off,” a crime branch source said.

After erasing the amount written on the cheques, he would re-write them by filling in a huge amount of Rs1 lakh or Rs5 lakh. “He has so far withdrawn a large amount of money from various banks in the state by tampering with around 39 cheques,” said the source.
