A recent attempt by fraudsters who created a fake website of the Indian Banks' Association (IBA), triggering panic among both customers and authorities, could have originated from the US, a top IBA official said.

"Investigating agencies have informed us that this particular fake website could have been hosted from the US. However, any confirmation in this regard is yet to be made," the official said on condition of anonymity.

On July 6, IBA found that "some fraudsters" were sending phishing messages to bank customers across the country using a link--http://www.iba.org.in/startpage.asp, asking for their bank IDs and passwords.

A senior police officer confirmed the US connection, but made it clear that no hacking attempt has been made on the IBA website.

"Some people were sending e-mails to customers asking for their account details. The mail has originated from the US and the issue is under investigation," the officer said.

The fake website had imitated the home page of IBA and "offered" an additional layer of security for online purchases, to prevent unauthorised individuals from using an ATM card to buy online.

"They used the name and other particulars of the website and asked for the bank IDs and passwords of different banks' customers. Now the matter is in the hands of investigating agencies," the IBA official said.

The banking industry body has approached the cyber crime cell of the Mumbai police and Indian Computer Emergency Response Team to investigate the case.

IBA is the national body of Indian banks from across the public, private and foreign segments.
