Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh has trashed exit polls after the final round of assembly elections in five states, including the polls taking place in Uttar Pradesh.

"I am saying that for me the exit polls are like trash, they were like trash earlier and today is no different. If I may ask how many seats did the exit polls allocate us the last time?" Singh told media here.

Singh further reiterated that the Congress party would gain massive victory in the Uttar Pradesh polls.

"I have said this before and would like to remain firm on my stand that astonishing results are awaiting the Congress party," Singh added

Earlier, Congress spokesperson Rashid Alvi said that in a democracy like India, representatives act as a medium for the people to express their opinion on governance in the country.

"In a democracy, the public decides. The public takes the decision regarding the country's future as well as its fate. These elections are just a process. The last phase of Uttar Pradesh and elections in Goa will conclude by this evening and we are hopeful that the Congress will form a government in all five states," said Alvi.

The Uttar Pradesh polls are being viewed as an opportunity for major political parties to re-establish their foothold in the country's fifth largest and most populous state.

The first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh phases of polling occurred on February 8, 11, 15, 19, 23, 28 respectively and March 3.

The poll results will broadly indicate trends for the 2014 general elections.
