Former Satyam Computers chairman B Ramalinga Raju, the prime accused in the Rs14,000-crore scam, was today discharged from NIMS after undergoing treatment for the past 10 months, paving way for his interrogation by the CBI which is likely in a day or two.

According to sources in the CBI, Raju who paid his maiden appearance before the investigating officer (IO) today will be issued a notice late in the evening to appear before them soon for questioning.

Raju appeared before the IO as part of the conditions laid down by Andhra Pradesh high court while granting bail in August, according to Raju's counsel Bharat Kumar.

"He appeared before the IO today. CBI could not question him on anything because as notice has to be issued to him prior to the questioning," CBI DIG Lakshimi Narayana said.

Sources told PTI that the questioning will revolve around the alleged funds diversion to some of the foreign countries from which CBI is awaiting replies.

The restated accounts presented by Mahindra Satyam indicated possible diversion of funds aggregating $41 million so far from the proceeds of the ads which were listed on the NYSE in May 2001.

The forensic audit revealed that diversion of funds possibly include payments to banks worth $22 million, payments of $9 million to other entities as well as cash outflows to unidentified beneficiaries to the tune of $10 million.

NIMS gastroenterologist Ajit Kumar said Raju requested the hospital authorities to discharge him yesterday.

"He made a request yesterday. He still has to be administered 11 injections as part of the treatment. However, the risk is much less now. His liver is functioning normally," Kumar said.

Raju has cleared the hospital bill of approximately Rs8 lakh yesterday, he said.

"We gave him some instructions on cleanliness and medication to follow. He did not indicate if he would be getting admitted in any other hospital," Kumar said when asked about the risk factor, which was cited as reason for Raju not attending the court proceedings earlier.

Recently, CBI had filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking cancellation of bail to Raju and nine others. The Apex court subsequently issued notice to Raju to file a reply before October 19.
