In another instance indicating the growing menace of fake cops, two men who claimed to be cops, forcibly took off a woman's bangles worth Rs45,000 on Wednesday, after she refused to follow their instruction to do the same.  The victim raised an alarm but looters sped away on a motorbike.

Sources in police said that this is the first incident in which fake cops have dumped their 'standard practice' of first cajoling their victims into taking off their jewellery and later taking it away by deception.

On Monday, the duo, aged between 30 and 40 years, stopped one Mina Zaveri, 65, near Havmor restaurant in Mahalakshmi Crossroads at 7:45am. "They told me that they were policemen and that a man had been killed in an incident of firing in the area. They asked me to take off my bangles for safety, but I refused," Zaveri, a resident of Salvan Appartment, Paldi, stated in her complaint lodged with Ellisbridge police.

However, after Zaveri refused to take off her bangles, the fake cops overpowered her and snatched away three bangles, Ellisbridge police said. The elderly woman shouted for help but the criminals managed to flee on their bike, police added.

Ellisbridge police have registered a case of loot and are further investigating the case.
