With Uttar Pradesh gearing up for the seventh and last phase of assembly polls, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi has urged the people to elect Congress in order to achieve good governance in Uttar Pradesh.

"It is the duty of state government to help you, and not to steal or make false promises. We (the central government) help you. We don't run the state government but still fight for region," Gandhi told a gathering here on Wednesday.

"The fight for weavers, Bundelkhand package, employment for the common man, MNREGA campaign, etc we fought for all. We have guaranteed the sanctioning of Rs. 12,000 to every poor family to which Mayawati and Mulayam Singh Yadav say that Rahul Gandhi is doing a drama," Gandhi added.

He further said that the Central Government for the welfare of the poor people has introduced many schemes.

Gandhi also said that the Congress party has always made true promises and never make fool of people unlike Mayawati and Mulayam Singh Yadav and is also achieving goals as per mentioned in their manifesto and vision document.

"We waived off your loans of billions, the federal government is going to provide loans of upto Rs2,00,000 crore, it is a guarantee. You got subsidy on raw thread, provided credit cards for weavers to which again Mayawati says my actions are dramatic," said Gandhi.

Rahul Gandhi, who has become the face of the Congress Party in Uttar Pradesh, is leaving no stone unturned in drawing the attention of the voters towards his party. Gandhi, who also has been holding public meetings and rallies across the state to influence potential voters, is banking on promises of progress and development if the Congress is returned to power in the state.

The Uttar Pradesh polls are being viewed as an opportunity for major political parties to re-establish their foothold in the country's fifth largest and most populous state.

A new 403-member state assembly will be elected in March. The poll results will broadly indicate trends for the 2014 general elections.
