If you are one of those looking for tips for effective leadership, former senior associate dean of Harvard Business School (HBS) Prof Srikant Datar has some ideas to groom your skills development, to inspire, motivate and get things done through others.

Prof Datar shared some words of business wisdom when he delivered a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad to hundreds of students from different colleges gathered at the premier institute on Monday. The professor was speaking on ‘Developing Critical Skills for Effective Leadership’.

“What is different about other professions and management when it comes to leadership?  Skills like the facts, framework and understanding of profession or practice are important but one fundamental difference is that effective leaders inspire, motivate and get things done through others,” he said. He also mentioned three skills in business that can’t work: knowledge without character, science without humanity and commerce without morality.

Prof Datar also emphasised on innovation in  leadership skills and said it is important to finding and framing problems, collecting, synthesising and distilling large volume of ambiguous data by using these skills creatively and innovatively. “Innovation is an activity to provide useable, novel solutions to problems, opportunity and challenge. It is important to find innovative individuals who are relentlessly curious, passionate and enthusiastic,” he said.

Talking about co-founder of Apple, late Steve Jobs, Prof Datar said that he was a unique person and it is difficult to learn from him. Prof Datar said that Jobs was intuitive and such qualities cannot be taught.

Talking about the faculty crunch faced by   institutes like IIM-A, Prof Datar said that the education system in India is focused on academicians while in USA there are two sections teaching at colleges: faculties and professionals like CEOs and this could be replicated in India too.
