It seems that small and poor farmers of Mahuva have used their power of vote against Nirma's cement plant near the town.

Sadbhavana Panel, a panel made up of people's representatives protesting Nirma's cement plant under the leadership of BJP's rebel MLA from Mahuva constituency Dr. Kanubhai Kalsaria, won 9 of the of 31 seats of Mahuva taluka panchayat.

In fact, the results of Mahuva taluka panchayat are as such that the
Sadbhavana Panel has got a trump card to decide who rules Mahuva taluka panchayat.

BJP won 14 seats, Congress got 7 and one seat went to an Independent. As BJP failed to get a clear majority the Sadbhavana Panel may play an important role in deciding who rules Mahuva taluka.

Moreover the Sadbhavana Panel has also won two seats in Bhavnagar district panchayat election.

Dr Kalsaria had parted ways with the BJP for people's cause and to protect Mahuva region's agriculture and land from the effects of the cement plant in the region. Welcoming the people's verdict Dr. Kalsaria said, "We are yet to take any decision about our future strategy. We will hold a meeting and then decide our plan of action."

Praveen Kathiria, one of the leaders of Sadbhavana Panel said the results are very encouraging. "Wherever our panel lost, we were the first runners-up. That means wherever the BJP or Congress has won, our candidates have come second. The most interesting thing is that none of our candidates were seasoned politicians. They are new and were fielded by the local people. The campaign was also very simple as all of us, including Dr. Kalsaria, had campaigned on scooters," Kathiria said.

According to locals, RK Makwana of the BJP, who is believed to have brought Nirma Cement plant to Mahuva, lost to a candidate of the Sadbhavana Panel.

There is buzz in Mahuva that despite offering various sops both the Congress and BJP failed to turn the voters against the panel.
