Incidents of house collapse invariably occur with the onset of monsoon, and this year has been no different. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC)'s control room has received around 52 complaints of risky and dangerous buildings, a majority of them from the central zone, during this monsoon.

It should be noted that nearly 20 buildings have already collapsed and several people have suffered injuries. AMC will resurvey the risky buildings and get them demolished in larger public interest. There are around 12 to 14 buildings in the central zone of AMC that needs to be demolished immediately.

The estate and town development department of the AMC had identified 460 'risky' buildings in the city's central zone last year. The owners of these buildings had been issued a notice regarding the same. This year, the number of such buildings is expected to be between 300 and 400. Out of these, around 250 are on the Rathyatra route.

IP Gautam, municipal commissioner of Ahmedabad, said that a team of structural engineers will complete the resurvey of such dangerous buildings within two days. “There are around a dozen buildings that need to be demolished,” he said. He added that the civic body will also make an appeal to people living in shaky buildings to vacate the place, at least during monsoon, so as to avoid any casualty in case of accident.

Officials of the estate and town development department regularly visit the wards, to check for buildings that need repairs. “The department serves notices to the owners of such houses, to get the buildings repaired,” said IK Patel, deputy municipal commissioner of AMC's central zone.

The department has also asked the owners to rope in structural engineers to get the buildings repaired.

In case of buildings that are in a poor state, such as those on the verge of collapse, the department issues a notice to the owner, warning them to demolish the building at the earliest.
