The Congress-DMK alliance will continue in the forthcoming assembly elections in Tamil Nadu (TN). DMK patriarch and TN chief minister M Karunanidhi said in New Delhi on Monday that a joint committee would be set up to discuss the issue of seat sharing.

He held two crucial meetings in the day in the capital — first with prime minister Manmohan Singh, and the second with UPA chairperson and Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

The continuance of the alliance was obviously sealed at the 30-minute session with Sonia at her residence. Karunanidhi was accompanied by daughter Kanimozhi, Union minister and grandnephew Dayanidhi Maran and senior party leader TR Baalu.

The alliance has been under a lot of political strain ever since the 2G spectrum scam involving DMK leader and then telecom minister A Raja became public, and the adverse attention the partners continue to draw despite Raja’s resignation is expected to impact their chances in the assembly polls.

However, with Karunanidhi confirming regional party PMK would be a part of the combine, Congress is feeling better.
