Tamil Nadu chief minister and DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi today asserted that his party could not be destroyed as being desired by a few political parties in the state.

"Many new entrants in politics have been trying to vanish DMK, which has a great legacy. Some parties are jealous. A few are irritated at seeing the growth of DMK and want to finish it off," Karunanidhi said.

But overcoming these parties, DMK was growing further and is successful, he said. He, however, did not name any party.

He advised such parties "not to sharpen their knives (to destroy DMK) and instead sharpen their wisdom," recalling DMK founder and late chief minister CN Annadurai's popular quote.

Speaking at a marriage function of his close associate and late leader Anbil Dharmalingam's grandson, Karunanidhi said the sacrifices and hardwork of several persons such as Dharmalingam had made the party what it was now.

Recalling his association with Dharmalignam, he said the late leader was instrumental in DMK getting national attention by suggesting that Annadurai be sent to Rajya Sabha after he had lost the Assembly polls from Kancheepuram. Annadurai was the first DMK member to speak in Parliament, he added.
