Under attack for severe water shortage in the national capital, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit today attributed the crisis to poor water management and warned that penalty would be imposed on those wasting the precious commodity.

"There is no shortage of water but there is problem in distribution and management. I have asked the officials to fine those who are found wasting water," Dikshit said after a meeting with the MLAs to review water situation in the capital.

However, she did not elaborate on how the defaulters would be identified and penalty would be imposed.

Dikshit also said that official have also been asked to streamline water distribution and management so that water needs of the public are met adequately.

"The officials have been instructed to plug water leakages. Executive Engineers of localities too have been asked to co-ordinate with the local MLAs to ease the water situation," Dikshit added.

She assured people that there will not be any shortage of funds for water-related projects while finance minister AK Walia has been asked to release funds at the earliest for the upcoming water plants.

The direction has come in the wake of angry protests across the city over shortage of water in the past few days so much so that the police had to use force to disperse protestors at Delhi Jal Board office in Sangam Vihar yesterday.

Incidentally, BJP members who had been raising a hue and cry over the water situation in the Delhi Assembly were conspicuous by their absence in the meeting chaired by Dikshit, who is also DJB chairperson.

MLAs from Congress and BSP besides senior DJB officials were present at the meeting. With the BJP skipping the meeting, Dikshit criticised the Opposition for not supporting the government on the critical issue.

"They just know how to criticise the government. They do not want any solution," Dikshit added.

The chief minister also said that DJB officials will soon get another Rs 5,000 to carry out maintenance work in their locality, she said.
