DGP asks forces not to harass law-abiding people in Srinagar

The meeting was held to review security scenario in the wake of violent protests against Sunday's killing of a boy in teargas shelling.

With people accusing security forces of "highhandedness", the Jammu and Kashmir DGP has instructed police and paramilitary forces to ensure safety of life and property of citizens.

Police chief Kuldeep Khoda during a high-level meeting yesterday asked securitymen not to harass the law-abiding citizens, official sources said.

The meeting was held to review security scenario in the wake of violent protests against Sunday's killing of a boy in teargas shelling.

Kashmir valley was on the boil since Sunday, leaving over 300 people, including 50 securitymen, injured in clashes between stone-pelting mob and security forces.

Though violence ended today authorities have restricted movement of people in most parts of the city. Over 100 youth, including some top separatist leaders were arrested.

The residents Rambagh, Natipora, Channapora, Batmaloo, Gojwara, Rajouri kadal and Nowhatta have accused police and CRPF of ransacking their houses, smashing window panes, roughing up youth and damaging vehicles after chasing away protesters.

Taking a strong note of the complaints, Khoda, camping here now, said "While dealing with situation firmly, police and security forces must ensure that law-abiding citizens are not put to any difficulty".

Strict instructions were issued to all wings and ranks of police and security forces to ensure safety of life and property of the people, sources said.

The meeting attended by senior civil, police, security and intelligence officials, discussed the prevailing situation and the measures to tackle it.

Khoda also asked people to be beware of mischief mongers and subversive elements, who always try to disturb peaceful atmosphere.

He also stressed on greater coordination between police and security forces at all levels for effective maintenance of law and order, they said.
