Detained Tamil fishermen set free by Sri Lankan court

The fishermen were held for allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line while fishing.

Twenty-two fishermen from Tamil Nadu detained by the Sri Lankan Navy on February 26 have been released following its efforts, the state government said today.
  
On the directions of Chief Minister J Jayalalitha, state government officials approached the Indian missions at Colombo and Jaffna, requesting for the release of the fishermen, held for allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL), and their five boats, an official release here said.
  
A local court yesterday accepted the plea of the Indian officials and ordered the release of the fishermen and their boats, it said. "After being handed over to the Sri Lankan navy, the Indian Coast Guard will bring them back tomorrow," it added.
   
The fishermen and their five boats were taken into custody by Sri Lankan naval personnel when they were fishing near the
IMBL off Arichalmunai at Rameswaram.
