The Dental Council of India (DCI), headed by Dr Anil Kohli, has withdrawn recognition from as many as 39 out of the total 289 dental colleges across the country with immediate effect. None of these de-recognised institutions are now allowed to admit fresh students in the first year classes for the year 2010-11.

In what is a double blow to the Union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, the derecognised institutions include the Indira Gandhi Government Dental College in Jammu and the Faculty of Dentistry, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), in New Delhi. While the former falls in the state to which Azad belongs, the other is close to the health minister’s heart.

No amount of pleading at the highest level could persuade the DCI to reverse its decision. The DCI confirmed to DNA, “Yes, we have de-cognised 39 colleges for providing deficient services, as despite repeated warnings, the conditions did not improve.”

“The vice-chancellors of both the universities had admitted deficiencies. These colleges did not follow the guidelines set by the Supreme Court. They had neither a good faulty and nor the required infrastructure,” the DCI wrote.

The VCs of both these universities made representations to Azad and to the Union human resources development minister Kapil Sibal. Both reportedly told the DCI to reconsider.

It is learnt that Dr Kohli had a series of meetings with officials in the health ministry. What transpired between him and the officials is not known. But health ministry sources asserted that the DCI was firm on its decision. However, the future of the students already admitted would not be in jeopardy.

The trouble began when the DCI conducted inspections of colleges and found that there was hardly any infrastructure for dental education in many prestigious institutions. When contacted, Dr Seema Malhotra, who is a media coordinator for JMI University, told DNA that efforts were underway to seek relief. It is learnt that Azad is not keen to apply pressure on DCI to reverse the decision.
