Delhi Police is searching for an US-based Indian, from whose bag live cartridges were allegedly recovered at the airport here, and who gave the slip to investigators.

The city police has also sought the help of their Kolkata counterparts to locate Subroto Lahiri, said to be a professor at a US university. Delhi Police had lost track of him though he was in their custody earlier.

Lahiri was to go to Kolkata from Delhi on Friday morning by Kingfisher Airlines but did not take that flight. He left by an Indigo flight later that day, sources in the police said.

Lahiri, who has been living in America for over 25 years, was held for allegedly carrying live cartridges on Tuesday at the airport. He had taken an American Airline flight and boarded a coach for the domestic terminal for a connecting Kingfisher flight to Kolkata on Wednesday morning.

However, he left behind a bag in the coach from which live catridges were found. After spotting the bag, CISF personnel had handed it over to terminal manager and when it was opened, live cartridges were found.

Lahiri was detained at the airport. Though he is a licence holder in the US, it is not valid in India. Sources said they also suspect that the licence has expired.

During his interrogation, Lahiri complained of chest pain and was admitted to a medical unit at the airport. He was later shifted to Fortis Hospital in Vasant Kunj. On Thursday, he was allowed to go.

Sources said investigators allowed him to leave for Kolkata and Lahiri was scheduled to board the Kingfisher flight on Friday morning. However, sources said, he did not take the flight and left the airport.

They said he later left for Kolkata on an Indigo flight. But his relatives in Kolkata claimed that he has not reached there.

A case under Arms Act has been registered.
