Delhi HC to pronounce verdict in medical student gang rape case tomorrow

The Delhi high court is likely to pronounce its judgement tomorrow on the appeals filed by two convicts undergoing life sentence in the sensational MAMC student gangrape case.
    
The verdict will come five years after the convicts --Rahul and his accomplice Amit -- were held guilty of raping a medical student by a trial court in January 2005.
    
The victim, a fourth-year student of the Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) was raped by the duo at knife point on the terrace of the famous Mughal monument Khooni Darwaza in central Delhi on November 15, 2002.
    
Rejecting a submission by defence counsel that his clients -— prime accused Rahul alias Budhparkash and his accomplice Amit -— should be released on probation as they were young, the trial court had said the convicts were guilty of a gruesome act, and no amount of punishment would be sufficient for them.
    
The court had awarded Rahul and Amit life imprisonment and acquitted two other accused, Ashok, of the charge of harbouring the accused, and Mohan Lal, of the charge of dishonestly receiving stolen property from the accused. The court had said that the prosecution had not been able to prove the charges against these two.
    
The Delhi police in 2003 had filed a chargesheet against four persons -- Rahul, Amit, Mohan Lal and Ashok -- in the case.
