The blasts that took place barely a kilometre from Parliament, which is in session at present, left Parliamentarians shocked. To many, it reminded of the December 13, 2001, terrorist attack on Parliament.

The fact that the blast occurred despite high alert in Delhi, which is always a drill during the Parliament sessions, baffled the leaders.

“This is of a great concern that the blast happened in Delhi despite high alert,” said JD (U) leader Sharad Yadav.

Senior BJP leader LK Advani, who was the home minister in 2001, wondered if the Wednesday’s blast had anything to do with the upcoming 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attack. “I hope the government will act on assurances given to the Parliament and will track down the perpetrators,” Advani said in Lok Sabha.

But, senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley was critical of the government saying the blast was due to intelligence failure. “No intelligence is an intelligence failure. Why no preventive steps like installing CCTVs were taken in Delhi high court even after the terrorists had conducted a dry run in May?”

The general feeling among the parties was that the intelligence agencies should have by penetrated into the Indian Mujahiddin and Lashkar-e-Toiba network. Even Congress leaders agreed, saying more was required to be done on the terrorism front and the blast should not have happened.

While demanding a high level probe into the blast, BJP president Nitin Gadkari said the probe should also look into the failure of the intelligence agencies. Taking a dig at home minister P Chidambaram, Gadkari advised him to “stop training his guns against political opponents and concentrate his energies in tackling the menace of terrorism.”

SP leader Mulayam Singh said whenever such attacks occur, the general tendency is to look at the people of a particular community with suspicion.

“Suspecting persons from a particular community or religion is a dangerous situation for the nation and it happens very often,” he said.
