Debt-ridden Paldi man kills self, 3 of his family

Fifteen days after layoffs drove an Amdavadi to kill himself and his family, another city resident ended his misfortunes on the stock markets by committing suicide after killing his mother, wife, and son, on Tuesday. In both instances, recession, which was born in America, was responsible for the bloody deaths in the city.

The latest episode of violent despair played out in Pritamnagar, where Avinash Patel ended the lives of his mother Hansaben (65), his wife Mona (32), and their son Shyamal (12). Patel then hanged himself, leaving behind a suicide note in which he attributed his drastic action to acute financial problems.

Patel used to sell computer hardware at Shivranjani crossroads and belonged to a prosperous family. But he had suffered heavy losses in the share market as recession crushed the bourses. He had to pay around Rs45,000 per month only as interest on private loans amounting to Rs25 lakh, one of Patel’s relatives told DNA. Private financiers were charging 10% to 20% interest per month, the relative said. “Avinash had suffered a loss of Rs25 lakh in the share market because of the slump.”

On June 6, Girish Prajapati of Meghaninagar had killed his wife and son and then hanged himself, unable to find any other solution to his financial problems caused by job loss.
