Curfew reimposed in four localities of Bareilly

Curfew has been reimposed in four localities of the town in the wake of fresh tension following arrest of a prominent Sunni cleric in connection with communal clashes, official sources said here today.
           
Day cufew, which was lifted on March 7, has been reimposed in three police station areas of Prem Nagar, Qila, Baradari and some parts of Kotwali this morning, they said.

Fresh tension erupted in the city after leader of Ittehad-e-Millat Conference Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan was arrested by the police on charges of inciting communal feelings, attempt to murder and treason last evening, sources said.
           
Protesting against Khan's arrest Sajjada Nasheen of Dargah-e-Ala Hazrat Maulana Subhan Raza Khan and other family members reached Kotwali police station and offered to court arrest.
           
Later a meeting was held between clerics and district administration after which Maulana Subhan Raza said the district magistrate had assured him of taking necessary action.
           
Bail application of Maulana Khan was today rejected by the lower court, sources said, adding a fresh application would be moved in the sessions court tomorrow.
           
Meanwhile, Ulama Council had warned of launching an agitation if the arrested cleric was not immediately released and compensation not paid to clash victims.
           
Day curfew had been completely lifted on March 7 as police arrested 204 people in connection with the clash.
