There’s a reward for putting up with Kashmir’s stone-pelters —— its Rs2,500.

At least, that’s the minimum amount of money Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) bosses have promised troops doing duty in Kashmir. The money could go up to Rs7,500, if God forbid, somebody gets seriously injured.

“CRPF personnel who get injured while maintaining law and order will be given Rs2,500. Those who receive grievous injuries will be given Rs7,500. This is not a compensation for their injuries, it is a reward for maintaining restraint in spite of getting injured,” said NK Tripathi, special director general of CRPF, Jammu and Kashmir Zone.

Clearly, paramilitary bosses are cut up with the loss of lives and injuries and they want to prevent more fatalities. In the past three months alone, more than 1,400 CRPF personnel have been injured in stone pelting incidents. Since June 11, when unrest started in the Valley, more than 107 people have died and over 504 injured in clashes between protesters and CRPF men.

Police records show that around 2,660 police personnel got injured in these clashes. Apart from this, mobs launched more than 50 attacks on CRPF camps in various parts of the Valley. A total of 78 government properties, 29 police stations and police posts were set ablaze and damaged by mobs. Protesters set fire to 23 houses belonging to policemen.

“At first, the police and CRPF use non-lethal methods to disperse the mob. Firing is resorted to only when there is imminent danger to life and property. Non-lethal methods are increasingly being used,” Tripathi said.

The CRPF men are also under duress. Stone-pelting has really caught the fancy of protesters in Kashmir and the men in uniform are expected not to retaliate every time they get hit. The buzzword is restraint, so personnel have to really control their urge to hit back.
