After the Gujarat government promulgated an Act banning illegal cow slaughter, police are keeping a strict vigil on illegal cow traffickers entering the city. However, those involved in the trade have gone a step ahead by altering their modus operandi. Despite this, city cops have caught three vehicles carrying 40 cows in the last one week. Preliminary investigations have revealed that all the mini trucks carrying cows came from Godhra via the Kathlal or Mehmadabad road.

Keeping a tight vigil near the Bombay hotel area on the Narol-Danilimda stretch, Danilimda police intercepted a Matador van carrying 2 cows and 9 calves on Sunday evening. Acting on a tip-off by some social workers about a Matador coming from Godhra with cows, police rescued the cows and arrested the driver, Mohammad Idris. He informed the police that one Sikandar Ghanchi from Godhra had sent cows and the consignment was headed towards Mirzapur.

On Monday, Danilimda police raided a house at Ram Rahim no Tekro near Nagina Masjid after receiving a tip-off from Geeta Rambhiya Trust. Police rescued 5 buffaloes hidden inside the house.

According to Nagji Desai, a Maldhari leader, traffickers are now using the Godhra route to transport cows in the city because of minimal police presence on that route. "If they enter the city from Adalaj, Mehsana, Sanand, or Sarkhej, they will have to face police checking at several points. But, it if they enter from Mehmadabad or Kathlal road, they can enter easily without encountering much trouble. Entering from Godhra via Mehmadabad is, therefore, now the preferred route for traffickers," said Desai. "Though taking this route may cost them a bit, it is the safest route available to them," added Desai.
