A Delhi court today issued a production warrant against extradited gangster Abu Salem as the Arthur Road jail authorities in Mumbai failed to produce him in connection with an extortion case.

"Issue fresh production warrant against Abu Salem for May 29, the next date of hearing," additional chief metropolitan magistrate Kiran Bansal said.

The court, which was to record the testimonies of prosecution witnesses, had to adjourn the hearing due to non-appearance of the accused.

Besides Salem, Romesh Sharma, alleged front man of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, is a co-accused in the case, lodged in 1998 at Hauz Khas police station here.

The trial of Sharma, which is at the fag end, is separated from that of Salem as he absconded after the offence and the proceedings against the later could start only in 2005 following his extradition from Portugal.

Recently, a sessions court had issued a notice to the prosecution on the plea of Sharma against a lower court's order closing his right to examine witnesses in his defence.

Sharma wanted to examine Gautam Adani, diretor of M/s Adani Exports, as a defence witness.

He is accused of providing details of Delhi-based businessmen to Salem, who, in turn, used to make threat calls to them for demanding protection money.

The court had earlier ordered framing of charges against Salem under section 384 (extortion) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of IPC.

According to the FIR, Salem allegedly made threat calls to businessmen Vinay Kumar Singh and Malkiyat Singh.

Sharma used to provide information to Salem on phone regarding the potential targets, police said.
